Facebook was Hacked and FBI is Helping Investigate the Attack

By on February 16, 2013

The intrusion affected computers of some workers in the social network. User’s data  were not violated according to Facebook.

The FBI is helping in the investigation of a “sophisticated computer  attack” against Facebook last month, which the social network has not compromised the user data.

As indicated by the daily “San Francisco Chronicle” The FBI is working with Facebook to determine the source of this attack “hacker” that took place last month and affected computers of some workers in the Californian company.

In a statement, Facebook said: “The attack occurred when several employees visited a website for mobile developers,” the web caused a “malware” or virus was installed on the laptops of these employees.

“As we discover the presence of malware, remediate infected computers at all, inform the authorities and began an investigation that continues today,” said Facebook in a blog yesterday.

Facebook, with more than 1,000 million users worldwide, is under sustained attack attempts, but this could be particularly problematic because it exploits vulnerabilities in Java code, the Oracle, which have proved problematic for Twitter recently.

The attack on Facebook is given shortly after Twitter acknowledged earlier this month that 250,000 users data had been obtained by “hackers” and that the operation “was not an amateur job.”

Also, the daily “The New York Times“, “The Washington Post” and “The Wall Street Journal” recently detected sophisticated hacking attempts, they said they were from China.

On Sunday, the National Intelligence Estimate, which collects information from intelligence agencies of the U.S. government said in its report for 2013 that the country is being systematically attacked by hackers and is the victim of a campaign of cyber espionage from China, but also from Russia, France and Israel.
