Evernote Suffered a Serious Security Problem

By on March 2, 2013

Evernote has suffered a serious security problem: all usernames, emails and passwords (encrypted) have been exposed, so Evernote has decided to reset all user’s passwords.

  • Evernote security is compromised
  • Usernames, emails and encrypted passwords were exposed
  • All passwords have been reset

Evernote has suffered a very serious security problem that has exposed the information of their users, information such as user names, passwords, and email addresses. However, passwords, according to what has been reported in its own official blog Evernote, remained encrypted, so no personal user content would have been accessible to external attackers, much less will have been modified or removed. In any case, this security issue of Evernote will likely result in a loss of confidence in the service.

This event is surely something more delicate than if it had occurred in other applications, remember that Evernote is used by many users as an information center where very personal  data is stored, in some cases financial information or even as a password manager for other services. Therefore, a security problem in Evernote has many more implications than Twitter or Wunderlist, for example.

Right now, all passwords have been reset in  Evernote. What does this mean? When any user wants to access your account, you will be referred to the Evernote site where you are asked to enter a new password that cannot be the same as the one used so far. It may be a good time to choose a more secure password that we used so far (if it was not already), as recommended in the official note Evernote, for example using some password generators that help strengthen its protection level. In any case, the company has already announced plans to release a security update in the next few hours to go blasting lessening the effect of the trust for its users that has generated the security problem of Evernote.
