Microsoft Changes Another Xbox One Policy

By on August 13, 2013

When it was revealed that the Kinect must always be activated when the Xbox One is on, several privacy concerns rose. People were concerned that someone would always be watching them.

Microsoft One

After careful consideration, the company recently decided that the Kinect will not have to be connected in order for the Xbox One to function anymore. The Kinect will still be shipped with the Xbox One when ordered, but users have more freedom as to when they want the camera to be working. Marc Whitten, the Chief Xbox One Platform Architect, also revealed that only text messages can be sent between the Xbox One and Xbox 360. There will be no cross-platform voice communication.

Ever since Microsoft unveiled the new Xbox system, many people of the gaming community have complained of the policies that were introduced. There was an uproar in concern to Microsoft requiring that all Xbox One consoles be connected to the internet 24/7, regardless whether the console user was playing an offline game or not. A few weeks after E3, Microsoft decided that internet connection will only be necessary during the initial console set up and online functions.

Xbox One users were also allowed to share their games without any restrictions, as it is with the Xbox 360. The system will not be region locked either.

What the People Want

Many people have warmed up the the Xbox One since its introduction, but there is still a large group of people that consider the original Xbox One to be the best. A petition was released late June to restore the original console policies in Change.org. Currently, there are over 28,000 supporters out of 35,000 that were requested to bring back Xbox One’s original policies. While there are people that have signed this petition with real intentions, others are simply signing it so more people will purchase a PS4. There are no guarantees whatsoever that Microsoft will revert its decisions if this petition reaches its goals.

It has been clear that up to now Microsoft has taken the gaming community’s opinions into careful consideration. The company is attempting to satisfy their potential customers while still trying to create a better product.
