Rare Deep Sea Creature Caught on Video

By on September 16, 2014

EV Nautilus, a current ship of exploration in the deep sea, found a rare creature while exploring the ocean studying marine biology. This rare animal appears to be a Siphonophore.

The Siphonophore, are an order of the Hydrozoa, a class of marine animals belonging to the phylum Cnidaria. Although a siphonophore appears to be a single organism, each specimen is actually a colony composed of many individual animals. Some siphonophores superficially resemble jellyfish.

You can watch the video below:

This beautiful organism drifted past the cameras, and they followed it for as long as they could keep track. They are made up of many smaller animals called zooids, and can be found floating around the pelagic zone in ocean basins around the world. One famous siphonophore species is the deadly Portugese Man O’ War.
