The Benefits of Self-Driving Cars
As our technology keeps advancing, new incredible inventions keep emerging from sci-fiction books. Self-Driving cars is one of them. Moreover, self-driving cars are right around the corner. Many experts have put their time wisely to create great studies on how self-driving cars will benefit us.
Supposedly, this great invention will have energy efficiency and emission reductions, which will help our environment tremendously. Recently, experts have been able to quantify them.
A recent study by the Intelligent Transportation Society of America showed that 2 to 4 percent reduction in oil consumption and related greenhouse emissions will occur over the nest 10 years as these cars infiltrate deeper into the market.
Self-driving cars in action
There has been already confirmed reports that these technologies have a significant sustainability benefits. The Smithsonian Institution, for example, reduced the fuel consumption on its fleet of 1,500 vehicles by 53% by using GPS tracking and wireless communication to efficiently control its vehicles. In addition, this increased their productivity tremendously.
In Ellicott City, Md., an efficient parking system uses sensors to detect if there are any parking spot available and sends the data to drivers live reducing the time they would normally spend looking for parking by 21%. This causes a good effect on emission and fuel saving.
Los Angeles County, Calif., introduced a new traffic signal synchronization system to improve the traffic in LA. This resulted in saving 31.3 million hours of travel time, 38 million gallons of fuel and 337,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year.
